Do you want to obtain ISO 9001 certification or are you curious as to why other organisations choose it? ISO 9001 is the globally accepted standard for quality management. With certification, you demonstrate easily and independently that you have a well-functioning quality management system. Often very important for your customers and for tenders. ISO 9001 checklist

Looking for a ISO 9001 checklist? Unfortunately, there is no checklist you can 'tick off' to comply with the standard. However, it is possible to prepare the organisation for possible certification in a number of steps. You can set up a quality management system yourself, or get help from a consultant. There are many consultancies that can help you with this.

The main steps

We list the important steps from such a preparatory ISO 9001 checklist for you (View ISO9001 standard at NEN):

  • Create support
Without management and direct support, it will not be easy to go through the rest of the ISO 9001 checklist. Define together the purpose of a quality management system and certification.

  • Communicate your role
Clearly state what your role will be and which other stakeholders will be required. By communicating this clearly, you immediately show that the processes within the organisation are structured.

  • Define the context
Define the context of the organisation and make sure it is in line with the strategic objectives and business processes. This is an important part within certification for ISO 9001

  • Draw up a plan
Create a project plan or an implementation plan. In it, it is important to secure what people, resources and methods are needed to achieve the set goals.

  • Do a GAP analysis
Do a GAP analysis or baseline measurement to determine what needs to be done to get from the current situation to the desired situation. In practice, you often find that you have already set up all sorts of things. The important thing here is that it becomes a coherent whole. Performing a baseline measurement will give you a good idea of this.

  • Start thinking about planning
Think about planning early, so as not to be late in doing so. It involves both implementing the management system and completing it. And applying for certification, to get that going.

  • Capture processes
Capture the processes that are needed to deliver the products or services. Record them in a quality management system, recognising the opportunities and risks involved.

  • Do internal audits
Do internal audits to properly establish the effectiveness of the quality management system that way.
  • Have a management review carried out
Have an executive assessment done, to get a better idea of the effectiveness of the system. A good management review has great value for the organisation, if done properly.

  • Achieve ISO 9001 certification
Having completed all the previous steps in this ISO 9001 checklist, it is time to apply for certification for the ISO 9001 standard.
